You can’t expect a blanket promise on safety in a sport like this. But you can try your best to make the best choices, which is relatively safer.

Is Bir Billing a good place to learn paragliding in India?

When it comes to learning paragliding in India, two locations are consistently recommended:

• Bir Billing (Himachal Pradesh)
• Kamshet (Maharashtra)

Bir Billing stands out because of:

• Consistent and predictable wind patterns
• Large takeoff areas suitable for beginners
• A long-standing paragliding culture
• Multiple schools with structured training programs

These factors make paragliding course in Bir Billing especially suitable for beginners, provided you choose the right school.

So, is paragliding safe in Bir?

Relatively, yes. Bir is considered one of the safer places in India for beginners because of its wind conditions.

But safety isn’t just about geography.

How to choose a paragliding school in Bir?

This matters more than location. There are many schools that promise flying in a few days and a work-from-home-friendly training programme.

I chose PG Gurukul based on:

• A personal recommendation from a paraglider friend
• Consistent feedback from pilots in Bir
• Their emphasis on technical understanding and safety
• And a message from the head instructor that informed me that the training is going to take all the time to work alongside!

The head instructor, Gurpreet Dhindsa, is OG in this sport. He has been flying since before paragliding was a thing in India. He has 30+ years of flying experience and 21 years in international competitions.

With 23 years of teaching experience in India and abroad, he is well-known for his sound technical knowledge and ground handling.

His focus is on creating thinking pilots, not just people who finish solo flights.

PG Gurukul is also ACI-accredited (Aero Club of India), which means:

• Nationally standardised training systems
• Certified instructors and equipment
• Legally valid licenses
• FAI IPPI cards recognised internationally

How much does a paragliding course in Bir Billing cost?

Here’s a transparent breakdown based on my experience.

Course Fees

• P1 + P2: ₹30,000
• P1 + P2 + P3: ₹55,000
• Integrated P1 to Thermaling Course: ₹70,000

I initially signed up for P1 + P2 + P3 and then decided to stop with P2 (full story here). They were very understanding at PG Gurukul and even refunded the difference.

Additional Costs (Often Overlooked)

• ACI License: ₹1,180
• Insurance (7–10 days): ₹961
• Site usage fees: ₹1,000
• Theory book: ₹600
• Transport to takeoff sites (depends on the number of flights and people sharing the cab): ~₹1,200 (I did 6 flights)

So when asking “how much is a paragliding course?” and budgeting, factor in these extras.

How many days does it take to learn paragliding?

It depends on:

• Weather
• Your learning pace
• Government restrictions
• Operational pauses (sometimes after accidents, as a sign of respect)

Approximate timelines:

• P1 + P2: ~6 days
• P1 + P2 + P3: ~11 days

Paragliding doesn’t work on strict schedules, and that’s part of learning the sport responsibly. I finished P2 in 7 days, and it was almost delayed further due to a government notification.

How to become a certified paraglider in India

1. Enrol in an ACI-accredited school
2. Complete structured levels (P1, P2, P3…)
3. Pass theory and practical evaluations
4. Receive ACI license + FAI IPPI card
5. Continue supervised flying before full independence

There are no shortcuts, and that’s a good thing.
